DT Curriculum

Intent

At Donnington Primary School, we value Design and Technology as an inspiring subject that helps to prepare children for the developing world. Pupils are taught to use their imagination and creativity to design and make a range of products, drawing on their mathematics, science, computing, and art knowledge. They use their skills to solve real and practical problems using the process of research, design, plan and evaluate. Through this process, they learn to take risks and overcome obstacles in the design and making process, helping them to become resourceful, innovative, and capable citizens with practical skills that can be relied upon in their future.

Implementation

In both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, Design and Technology is taught on alternate half terms. We aim to inspire, challenge, and provide our children with a clear purpose for creating their work and therefore ensure it is linked to our Creative Curriculum topics to make learning more meaningful.

We use the Kapow Primary scheme of work to guide our curriculum and then tailor it to the needs of our pupils and our Creative Curriculum. Children are given opportunities to work within the following strands: Design, Make, Evaluate, and Technical Knowledge. The key areas of learning focused upon are: Structures, Mechanisms, Electrical Systems, Cooking and Nutrition, Textiles, and the Digital World. Our pupils have the opportunity to be creative while embedding technical knowledge and understanding to build the expertise required for the next stage of their learning.

Design and Technology is assessed through verbal feedback and next steps to improve pupils' work and ensure that skills are being developed progressively. Evidence of learning is collected within the Art and Design Technology sketchbook.
