Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

Welcome to the Year 3 class page. The Year 3s have been busy this autumn term with their learning. They have been working hard and should be proud of their achievements thus far.

Reading and Writing Reading in Year 3 continues to focus on the important VIPERS skills. These skills help our students to understand a range of different texts and gain greater depth of reading comprehension. In our writing, we have focused on different writing styles with different purposes. The students have learnt about the features of recounts, non-chronological reports, narratives, diary texts and dialogues. Our Accelerated Reader programme continues to quicken in pace, with more and more students completing online quizzes for books they have read. Please do ensure your child brings their AR book to school. On Tuesdays I check the children’s Reading Record Books, so do please ensure your child brings their record book to school on this day.

Maths In Maths we have focused on multiplication and division. The children have learnt about arrays to express multiplication sentences. They have used number lines and bar models to understand multiplication concepts and solve written problems. Times tables are especially important, and we encourage our students to learn them and be able to quickly recall number facts day to day.

Science, History and Geography In Science we have completed our topic of Light and Dark. We explored light and shadow, and opaque, translucent and transparent materials. We have begun a new topic based on Rocks and Soil. In History, we have focused on Ancient Egypt and in Geography we have recently completed our topic on Rivers. We have now begun to explore the topic of Mountains! Can you say the difference between a hill and a mountain? Year 3s can!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Year 3! It is so wonderful to have the children back to school and I am looking forward to the new school year. Now in Key Stage 2, Year 3 will be a challenging, but very rewarding year for everyone!

In Year 3 we are very lucky to have Ms Barak as our support staff member!

As we have a busy year ahead, I must stress the importance of good attendance and punctuality; missing lessons makes it very difficult for children to build on their learning.  Should your child be absent, please inform the school on the first day of absence; then send a note for the register on the first day back.

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the importance of children spending time reading at home; not only do good readers make better writers, but it is an essential life-skill for children. Please bring your book bag and reading record every day.
